Arrivals and Departures

General Information

  • We strongly encourage all learners to be present on campus by 7:55 AM each day as learning begins promptly at 8:00 am.

  • Gates to campus open and campus supervision begin at 7:45 am. As we do not have supervision available until 7:45 am, we respectfully ask that families do not drop off their learners until 7:45 am.

  • Each school day there will be a 7:55 AM bell which will signal the time that all learners should move to their respective classrooms (if they have not done so already).  The 8:00 AM bell is our tardy bell and those learners arriving at or after 8:00 AM will be marked tardy.

  • School ends promptly at 2:32 pm for grades TK-5, and 2:52 pm for grades 6-8 on regular (non-minimum) days. Learners are expected to go home immediately after school. We strongly encourage our learners to avoid the park before and after school as we do not provide supervision for that location.

  • Please plan a safe, consistent route for your child to follow to and from school each day.

  • If you are picking up your child, please choose a location accessible to you and your child. It is sometimes helpful to have your child meet you at one of the side streets that is out of the regular school traffic.

  • The school Safety Patrol that controls the crosswalk in front of the school are Grant students that perform this valuable service under the direction of San Diego Police Department. Please respect and follow their traffic directions and cross at the intersection.

Absences

  • If your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact the school during office hours, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. The Grant School answering machine is informational only and does not receive messages.

  • No note is required if you call in your child's absence.

  • If you are planning an extended absence (5 school days or more), an Independent Study Contract will provide a way for your student to keep up with their schoolwork. Contract arrangements must be made at least one week prior to the absence.

Tardies

  • If your child is tardy, please obtain a tardy slip from the office prior to going to the classroom.

  • To reiterate, we encourage all learners to be present and on campus by 7:55 AM.  The 8:00 AM bell is the tardy bell as 8:00 AM is the time when instruction and learning should begin.

Early Release

  • Should you need to take your child out of school during the school day, parents/guardians must obtain a Permit to Leave Grounds During School Hours slip from the office.

  • In the event of an emergency, school personnel are only authorized to release students to those individuals you list on your child's enrollment card. If you are requesting that certain individuals not be authorized to pick up your student, you will need to state that on the card as well.

Walking to and from School

  • We expect families to discuss the route the children will take so that safety is addressed. We do not have supervision in the park before or after school, so please do not have your child go there unattended.

  • It is extremely important that all students go directly home after school before going to a play date unless previously agreed upon by all parties.

Driving to School

  • The drive-through area directly in front of the school is intended for drop off and pick up only. It is clearly identified. If you drive your child to school, please respect the system which is in place. If you need to park and walk your child onto campus, please plan ahead and park on a side street. Do not leave your car idling in the drive-through area.
  • Please follow the Department of Motor Vehicle laws for parking or waiting. It is extremely dangerous when students are called out to a car in the middle of a street. We do have a crossing area monitored by the safety patrol that we would like our students to use when crossing Washington Place. In addition, turning cars around in the middle of the road or in intersections present opportunities for injury.  Please do not turn around in the middle of the road or in any intersections near or around the school.
  • Parking lots are closed both before and after school. They are not available for pick up or drop off due to the high volume of foot traffic. The best strategy for drop off and pick up is to designate a location off campus to meet your learner.
  • The curb area from the upper parking lot to the lower parking lot along Washington Place is considered a "No Parking Zone" from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. each school day. This is a ticketed area if the San Diego Police Department should drive by. We have extended the drop-off and pick-up area to incorporate curb space by Pioneer Park.

Riding a Bike

Students may ride their bike to school if they abide by the following rules:

  • A helmet must be worn by every rider.
  • Bicycles must be ridden following all traffic rules outlined by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Bicycles must be walked when on campus.
  • All bicycles must be placed and locked in the bicycle area.

Bus Riding Parents and guardians can assist us in keeping their children safe by teaching and reinforcing the rules and consequences which are provided by the San Diego Unified School District's transportation website. To ensure the safe and orderly transportation of all commuter students as they ride to and from school each student riding the bus is expected to follow these rules:

  • Enter and leave the bus in an orderly manner in single file.
  • No physical playing or rough conduct is allowed at anytime.
  • Remain seated at all times and keep head and other body parts inside the bus.
  • No loud conversations, singing or yelling.
  • Since district policy does not allow radios and CD players or video games on campus, they may not be brought onto a school bus.
  • There will be no eating or drinking on the bus.
