Eighth Grade Promotion

Eighth graders who exemplify the spirit of Grant's middle school will be invited to attend a special recognition ceremony at the end of the year. In order for students to be promoted to the 9th grade, they must meet the academic standards of the San Diego Unified School District.

In order to participate in the 8th grade promotion ceremony and 8th grade activities throughout the year, students must be in good academic and citizenship standing. This includes:

  • maintaining passing grades (A, B, C, D)
  • no more than one academic D
  • maintaining passing citizenship grades (E, G, S)

In addition, students must have on-time, regular attendance. This includes

  • no more than three (3) tardies to any class during each six-week progress reporting period (three tardies = N)
  • no more than three (3) unexcused absences during each six-week progress reporting period (three unexcused absences = N) or six (6) unexcused absences within an eighteen-week semester.

Also, students must follow all school policies and rules. This includes:

  • no more than two (2) referrals during a semester.
  • no suspensions.

Eighth grade students who do not meet these requirements at any progress report or semester marking period will be placed on probation. Students placed on probation will meet with school staff to set goals and create strategies for remediation. Students may be given an opportunity to earn back participation in promotion by showing improvement in any affected area/s throughout the school year.
